Bankhead Chess

Hi, I’m Richard! Bankhead Chess is a style I created in Atlanta Ga over 30 years ago. A native of Atlanta Georgia, I created a strategy that I call “The Garner rules”

I work as a teacher and I am from the ‘hood (I grew up on Bankhead Highway, Elbridge Dr). Chess has been increasingly important to our lives because we wanted to give these high school aged youth an opportunity for success in life beyond their rough neighborhoods. It gives them something productive they can do with there time while also teaching valuable lessons about what it means be good at anything or anyone else besides themselves.

The way that chess helps this happen? It requires focus & discipline which are two things not many people have problems finding if you live anywhere outside 99% of America’s major cities nowadays.

Bankhead chess is a style that I developed in the 1990’s. I am a teacher in the inner city schools of Atlanta. I’m from Atlanta and have been involved in chess for all of my life.

I developed the style in order to give myself a base set of rules to follow while learning and getting better. I did this by taking a base set of rules and adding variations to them.

In 1997, I taught an after school chess club at Bankhead elementary school. I was the only teacher there from 3:30 pm-6:00 pm each day. However, I still had 37 students who showed up because they were intrigued with the game. Unfortunately, the school only had 27 chess sets available for them to use. This meant that there were 9 students who couldn’t play because they didn’t have a set or pieces.

The rules for this style of chess can be found at http://www.bankheadchess.com
